Executive Overview

Crude Oil Storage

Crude oil storage is the buffer that separates production and marine logistics from refining and trading decisions. Crude Tankers III AS provides independent crude tankage operated to institutional standards of custody, segregation and measurement, giving traders, refiners, national oil companies and commodity houses a neutral, reliable place to hold, blend and move crude on their own schedule.

As an independent operator we take no commodity position against our customers. Your crude is held in dedicated or segregated tankage matched to its assay and vapour characteristics, measured under API MPMS-based procedures, and released only against authenticated instructions. Every barrel is documented so that ownership and quantity can be proven at any time by your own appointed surveyors.

Storage is offered under term, spot, throughput and dedicated structures, with heating and circulation for heavier grades, blending support where infrastructure allows, and marine, pipeline, road and rail connectivity as available at each facility.

Typical Applications

Contango and carry storage

Hold length against market structure — capturing carry, blending optionality and scheduling flexibility — in neutral, independent custody.

Refinery feedstock buffer

Decouple crude receipts from crude runs and manage the parcel-size mismatch between cargo economics and refinery intake.

Grade segregation and assay protection

Maintain the integrity of individual crude grades, or build blends to a target assay under documented, metered movements.

Strategic and obligation stocks

Hold physical crude for supply-security programmes and compulsory stock obligations, with audit-ready records.

Blending to export specification

Combine grades to reach a market-standard export quality, with laboratory verification and full blend traceability.

Distressed and transit cargoes

Provide a documented, verifiable physical home for cargoes between purchase, financing and onward placement.

Specification Protection & Dedicated Storage

The value of a crude grade is its assay. Our specification-protection philosophy is built to preserve it from receipt to redelivery. Customers can contract dedicated tankage for exclusive use, or segregated capacity within defined grade families where commingling of compatible grades is acceptable.

Product segregation is enforced at three levels: dedicated tank groups per grade family; dedicated or verifiably cleared transfer lines; and procedural controls covering line displacement, interface management and first-fill sampling after any change of service. Every internal movement runs on a written, independently verified valve line-up, isolated from other services by double block-and-bleed arrangements.

Where a tank or line changes service, a documented product-change procedure applies, including cleaning to a defined standard and a first-foot sample that confirms the new grade before the full parcel commits. Cross-contamination is made difficult by hardware, unlikely by procedure, and detectable by evidence — the sealed, retained samples and signed records that let any question be resolved objectively.

Custody, Measurement & Batch Traceability

Opening and closing quantities for every movement are established by static tank gauging or proved meters, corrected to standard conditions using calibrated tank tables under API MPMS-based procedures. Samples are drawn, sealed and retained at every custody point, and independent surveyors appointed by cargo interests may witness gauging, sampling and calculation throughout.

Each parcel carries a complete, reproducible batch history: receipt documentation, in-storage sample and test records, internal movements, blend orders and redelivery certificates. This batch traceability is the working paper trail of ownership and quality that your counterparties, financiers and auditors expect.

Blending Capability & Quality Release

Our blending capability turns tankage from a cost centre into a margin tool. In-tank and in-line blending build finished or export-grade crude against a written blend order that defines components, quantities and the target assay. Additive-injection capability supports specific quality or handling requirements where applicable.

Component movements are metered; the resulting blend is sampled and tested by an accredited independent laboratory; and product is released only after quality verification against the target. The full record — blend order, metered movements, laboratory results and release approval — enters the parcel file, giving complete blend traceability and documentation that survives the buyer's own inspection.

Infrastructure Features

Engineered Terminal Infrastructure

The systems behind every service — each maintained, monitored and operated to institutional standards.

Heated Tanks

Insulated tankage with heating coils and circulation keeps viscous grades — fuel oil, feedstocks and heavy crudes — at pumpable temperature and on-specification.

Floating-Roof Tanks

Roofs that ride on the product surface minimise vapour space, evaporative loss and fire risk for crude and volatile white products.

Fixed-Roof Tanks

Pressure-vacuum-controlled fixed-roof tankage for lower-vapour and heated services, with managed breathing and overfill protection.

Tank-to-Tank Transfers

Controlled internal movements on verified line-ups for grade management, blending and maintenance windows, measured and documented as custody events.

Marine Loading Arms

Articulated ship–shore loading arms and hoses operated to ISGOTT, with emergency release and continuous watch during cargo transfer.

Truck & Rail Loading

Multi-bay loading gantries with metered, additive-capable dispatch and per-lift ticketing for road and rail distribution.

Pipeline Interfaces

Custody-metered pipeline connections to refineries, terminals and grids, with batch scheduling and interface management on multiproduct lines.

Custody-Transfer Metering

Proved flow meters and calibrated tank gauging establish opening and closing quantities under API MPMS-based procedures.

Sampling Systems

Representative sampling at receipt, in storage and at redelivery; samples are sealed, labelled and retained under an agreed retention protocol.

Laboratory Services

Testing through accredited independent laboratories verifies product against specification and supports blend release and dispute resolution.

Vapour Recovery

Vapour recovery and management systems, where installed, reduce emissions and evaporative loss during storage and loading.

Fire Protection Systems

Foam, cooling and detection systems sized to the tank-farm risk profile, with resources matched to credible fire scenarios.

SCADA Monitoring

Supervisory control and data acquisition provides real-time monitoring of levels, temperatures, flows and alarms across the terminal.

Control-Room Operations

A staffed control room coordinates movements, monitors instrumentation and holds authority over line-ups and emergency response.

Emergency Shutdown Systems

Independent emergency shutdown logic can safely halt transfers and isolate systems on demand or on defined trip conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crude Oil Storage — FAQ

How is crude oil storage charged?+
Storage is priced by negotiation against your specific requirement — reflecting structure (term, spot, throughput or dedicated), tenor, product characteristics, throughput profile and any ancillary services. We do not publish rate cards; indicative terms follow counterparty qualification and NDA.
What crude grades can be stored?+
Grade acceptance depends on tank service envelopes — vapour pressure, pour point, heating needs, hydrogen sulphide content and segregation family. Provide the assay with your inquiry and we confirm fit during screening.
Can dedicated tanks be leased for crude?+
Yes. Dedicated tankage is available where exclusivity, assay control or programme requirements demand it, under term or throughput structures.
How are inspections handled?+
Independent surveyors appointed by cargo interests may witness opening and closing gauging, sampling and quantity calculation at every custody point, and may seal and receive retained samples.
Can SGS or other independent inspections be arranged?+
Yes. You may appoint your own inspection company, or we can arrange inspection through an accredited independent laboratory; both are accommodated.
Can crude be blended in storage?+
Yes, where infrastructure allows. Blends are executed tank-to-tank or in-line against a written blend order, with metered movements, laboratory verification and full traceability.
How often are inventory reports issued?+
Stock statements are issued on an agreed cadence — commonly daily or per movement — with reconciliation summaries and movement confirmations. Reporting frequency is set in the storage agreement.
How are transfers and evacuation scheduled?+
Movements are coordinated through centralised scheduling and initiated by authenticated instruction, executed on verified line-ups with simultaneous monitoring at source and destination.
Is marine access available?+
Yes. Marine receipt and delivery is operated to ISGOTT with berth scheduling, ship/shore safety checklists and surveyor witness; berth specifications are published per facility.
How are gains and losses handled?+
Gains and losses are computed daily and reconciled within tolerances defined in the storage agreement; anything beyond tolerance triggers investigation with findings shared with you.
What documentation is issued?+
Receipt and redelivery quantity certificates, sample and quality records, blend documentation where applicable, periodic stock statements and a final reconciliation — all reproducible for audit.
Do you take any position in my crude?+
No. We are an independent operator and hold no commodity positions against our customers. Your crude, your position and your market view remain entirely yours.
